5 DASP Refund Mistakes That Cost Backpackers Thousands

The DASP process looks simple until it isn't. These are the five expensive slip-ups we see travellers make — and how to avoid every one of them.

5 DASP Refund Mistakes That Cost Backpackers Thousands

1. Claiming before your visa expires

The ATO will bounce your DASP application if your visa is still active. Wait for cancellation or natural expiry, then apply. Trying to game this triggers extra scrutiny.

2. Forgetting your Tax File Number

Without a TFN, your withholding tax jumps from 35% (or 65% for WHM) to the top marginal rate — 45%. If you can't find it: log into myGov or email the ATO with your passport and visa details.

3. Ignoring your "other" super funds

Every casual job in Australia can spin up a new default super fund. It's not uncommon for a backpacker to have 3 or 4 tiny balances scattered across AustralianSuper, Hostplus, Rest and Cbus. Each needs its own DASP form. Consolidate first, or hire someone (hi 👋) to track them all.

4. Sending the wrong bank details

International bank details are where 20% of refunds get delayed. Triple-check:

  • IBAN and SWIFT/BIC for European accounts
  • BSB + account number for Australian accounts
  • Beneficiary name spelling exactly matches your passport

5. Waiting too long

You have 6 months from your visa cancellation to claim from your super fund directly. Past that, the balance is transferred to the ATO as "unclaimed super" and you need to reclaim from them separately — still possible, but with more paperwork.
